It was the early 1970s, and we had set up our little company, Cyclops Films, at 1600 Broadway. We were equipped with a newly purchased Éclair NPR, a Nagra recorder and our infatuation with cinéma vérité. We were approached by Jack Willis at WNET, who had just started a series called “The 51st State,” a news and documentary show about the New York City metro area. London CNN —WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has fended off the threat of immediate extradition to the United States after the High Court in London asked the US to provide more assurances. US authorities say Assange, 52, put lives at risk by publishing secret military documents and have for years been seeking his extradition on espionage charges. If the US fails to give these assurances, Assange would be allowed to appeal his extradition at a further hearing in May. Assange has fought extradition for the last five years from London’s Belmarsh prison, and for seven years before that was holed up as a political refugee at the Ecuadorian embassy in the UK capital. But the court refused to grant him leave to appeal on the ground that the prosecution is politically motivated.

CNN —German authorities have been tracking down the former members of the Red Army Faction (RAF), a now-defunct Cold War-era militant group, who have been on the run for nearly 30 years. The RAF, he said, emerged in what was then West Berlin, at the “crossroads” of the Cold War. The first, and most prominent period from 1970-1977, saw the group murder public officials and US soldiers and take many hostages. In April 1975, six RAF members seized the West German Embassy in Stockholm in a hostage standoff with the goal of forcing the release of imprisoned RAF members. The Red Army Faction claimed responsibility for the assassination, but the perpetrators were never brought to justice.

Mexico’s presidential campaign is well underway and if the polls are to be believed, Claudia Sheinbaum, a physicist and candidate of the left-leaning ruling Morena party, could be the country’s next president. Ms. Sheinbaum, who is of Jewish descent, holds a staggering 30 percentage point lead over Xóchitl Gálvez, a tech entrepreneur of Indigenous descent. Ms. Sheinbaum, who lacks his charisma and political acumen, is seen as the continuator of his political project. If elected, Ms. Sheinbaum will be Mexico’s first Jewish president. As a Mexican of Jewish origin, I have seen with amazement and optimism how so many Mexicans, in a predominantly Catholic country, are backing someone of her gender and religious origin.
